About About
ABOUT FAZ Founded in 1929 when organized football took a semblance of organization on the Copperbelt, the Football Association of Zambia is one of the oldest soccer federations on the continent. The Football Association was formally recognized by the global community after FAZ joined world soccer governing body FIFA at independence in 1964. It was the same year that the Zambian football federation affiliated to continental body, CAF – the Confederation of African Football.
FAZ is also a member of the regional Council of Southern Africa Football Associations. Since independence on October 24 1964, Zambian football has a splendid history, a rich heritage on which the football foundations of the Chipolopolo Boys, as the Zambia National team is fondly called, is built.
In that history is embedded the April 28th 1993 Gabon Air Disaster – Zambia’s worst aircraft accident which claimed the lives of an entire generation of footballers and FAZ officials. The Buffalo plane crash, off the Atlantic coast of Libreville shattered hopes of what many believed would have been a maiden FIFA World Cup finals appearance. The team was en-route to Senegal for a 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Lions of Teranga.

From the days of the KK11, as the Zambia National Soccer Team was called, great administrators who include Tom Mtine, Winston Gumbo, Wilfred Wonani, Rupiah Banda, Michael Mwape and Evaristo Kasunga have all been at the helm of the game. The FAZ Executive Committee At the last elective FAZ annual general meeting, a new chapter opened in Zambian football when the Zambian soccer family elected another Great, a living legend in Kalusha Bwalya to assume the top office of the Association. Today, the FAZ is headed by the 1988 African Footballer of the Year; a man who holds the record for most Zambia caps at 100 with the most goals at 50 in Zambia internationals.
The 1996 African Nations Cup Golden boot winner, technical director, FIFA World Cup ambassador and administrator was elected alongside his executive committee at the March 29 2008 Annual General Meeting of the FAZ.
